So I've been diving deep into the specs of the new Lexus RZ 450e and let me tell you, its DIRECT4 AWD system sounds pretty wild. It sounds pretty impressive on paper - they're claiming it can shift power between the front and rear wheels instantly based on your driving needs, pretty cool, huh? But here's the big question: has anyone actually taken this beast for a spin yet? Does it live up to the hype? I’m especially curious about how it handles in different road conditions and if it really makes a noticeable difference in performance.

I can feel your enthusiasm, haha! Yeah, that instant shift is pretty crazy. A friend of mine showed me that. As for the spin... I don't have any experience. I still think better road conditions are better for the car's health. Don't you think?

I read a few initial reports saying that Direct4 offers smooth and responsive handling. Some though went for the RZ 4503 for its dynamics and improved handling (which means a slightly improved handling compared to the traditional AWD systems). Anyway, I am curious, though, especially on how it performs in different weather conditions and road types.

The spec sheet is impressive. I don't get how they shift 100-0 to 0-100 torque (or anything in between), but that's what Lexus promotes.

What I can tell you from nearly 2,000 miles driven, I have only heard the tires chirp slightly once, and I had the wheel turned at the time. It holds traction very well even in rain. My sure-footed GX would chirp more often (I think it was able to shift up to 60-40) as it tried to find purchase on uneven pavement.

Handling-wise, I the RZ is solid. It is not quite VW GTI or R nimble, but it weighs like 1,100 lbs more, rides taller, and wheelbase is 8.5" longer. I suspect regenerative braking cuts into cornering, but I really need to spend more time on windy roads to test it with regenerative on/off. I have also considered grabbing an extra pair of rear 18x8" wheels to stick up front--curious how a square setup would change things.
